Website accessibility statement

We want our websites to be as open and inclusive as they can be. That means they can be used by the widest possible audience.

This accessibility statement applies to the online shop website, which is run by the Trustees of the Natural History Museum, London. We also have information on accessibility across our other Museum websites in a separate website accessibility statement.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use our online shop. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings.
  • Zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen.
  • Navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software.
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader, including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver.

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. We write in plain English and explain scientific terms wherever possible.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible.

We support and test our site on the following browsers, including the current and previous two minor versions, on Windows, Android and Apple devices:

  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari
  • Chrome

If you are using an older or different browser, or a different operating system, you may find this online shop website has further problems than those listed below:

Some elements such as the carousel page dots on the homepage, the question mark help button on the shipping page, and the bullet points on the product pages do not show the correct level of contrast.

  • The cookie banner may be difficult to use with a keyboard.
  • The keyboard focus doesn’t show on some components such as the search, account and basket in the navigation, add-to-basket buttons and on filters in category pages.
  • Our main banner button on the homepage does not show at a zoom of 200%.
  • We have no skip-to-content button in the navigation.
  • Some headers are missing on product and payment pages.
  • Not all icons and buttons have clear descriptions for screen readers such as our edit basket, delete item from basket and add to basket buttons.
  • Our payment icons in the footer do not have alt text.
  • Our editable fields on the shipping page are not consistently styled so it’s not clear for all users if they are buttons or links.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 A standard, due to ‘the non-compliances and exemptions’ listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • The dots used to indicate different pages for our carousels on the homepage can’t be seen in high contrast mode. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 1.4.11. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • You are currently able to move the keyboard focus behind the cookie banner instead of having the keyboard focus stick to the cookie banner when it pops up. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.11. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • At the top of our homepage, the hero banner button does not show at a zoom of 200%, although it does work at all other magnification levels. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 1.4.10. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • There is way to skip past the main navigation to get to the main page content on any page of the site. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.1. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Keyboard focus does not show on search, account and basket icons in the main navigation. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.7. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Keyboard focus does not show on add-to-basket buttons on any page of the site. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.7. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Keyboard focus does not show on carousels for arrows or dots on the homepage. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.7. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Keyboard focus highlights both the image and the clickable link for the row of three components in the middle of the homepage. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.7. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Keyboard focus does not show on filters on any category page. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.7. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • There is no primary H1 header on any product page. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.6. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Bullet points on all product pages do not meet the correct colour contrast criteria. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.11. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • More description is needed for edit item and delete item icons in the mini cart and review your order page for screen readers. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 3.3.2. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Mandatory fields on the review your order basket page are not described clearly enough for screen readers. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 3.3.2. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Payment method icons do not have alt text enabled for screen readers in the footer. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 1.1.1. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • The title for payment methods needs to be added as an H1 header for screen reader users. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.6. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • These headers are missing from the elements list despite being styled as headers on the payment pages: payment method, ship to and shipping method. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 1.3.1. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Our payment icons are not consistent across the pay journey when compared to what we display in the footer. We show Amex and not Maestro in the checkout but show Maestro and not Amex in the footer icons. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 3.2.3. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Our add-to-basket buttons are not descriptive enough for screen readers on all pages. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 2.4.4. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • The question mark help icon does not meet correct colour contract criteria on the shipping page. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 1.4.11. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
  • Our editable fields are not consistently styled on the shipping page making it difficult to assess if they are buttons of links. This fails WCAG2.2 success criterion 3.2.4. We are aiming to fix this by end of March 2027.
