Description / Shadowlands Wall Print
Shadowlands © Roberto Marchegiani (2025). Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum, London.
Animals in their Environment, Highly Commended 2025
Navigating narrow channels and lake edges in a small boat, Roberto was immediately struck by the strong glow of the heron’s eye. He composed the photo by taking advantage of the light’s angle, cutting perfectly across the scene.
Lake Martin provides vital habitat for species such as alligators, as well as spoonbills and other waders. It also slows and filters waters entering the Gulf of Mexico, helping oysters and other aquatic species to flourish downstream.
