Earlier, Rahul had watched marabou storks hunting around a large grassland fire. That evening, all was calm in the lush woodland. A slight movement of the camera during this exposure blurred the boundary between animal and habitat – only the elephant’s brilliant white tusks remain pin-sharp.
African savanna elephants are spread across 24 countries in Africa. Habitat fragmentation, poaching for ivory and conflict with farmers mean they occupy only 15% of their historic range.
