Description / Labour of Love Wall Print

Labour of Love © Oscar Whitfield (2026). Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum, London.

Young Grand Title Winner of Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2026
11–14 Years, Winner 2026

Using a fast shutter speed and high light sensitivity, Oscar lay flat on the ground to photograph the beetle at eye level, with the sunshine and heat creating dry dust all around him.

There are more than 5,000 species of dung beetle found around the world, and they play a vital role in their environments. Breaking up dung and burying it prevents the conditions required for methane production, reducing the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions. Burying dung also helps it decompose faster, reducing the number of pests affecting livestock and wildlife.
