Description / Freshwater Colour Wall Print

Freshwater Colour © Isaac Szabo (2026). Wildlife Photographer of the Year is owned by the Natural History Museum, London.

Under Water, Highly Commended 2026

Snorkelling in shallow waters, Isaac encountered this vivid gathering at a common spawning site. He was “struck by how incredible scenes like this play out without anyone to witness them”.

The action centred on a nest of stones built by a male bluehead chub. The nursery attracts females from many species seeking a safe spawning site, sometimes drawing hundreds of fish. By sharing his nest, the bluehead increases the odds that his own offspring will survive if predators strike.
