William Smith

In 1815 Britain's first geological map was published, and is the extraordinary achievement of just one person - William Smith. He wanted to create something that was both scientifically useful and visually impressive by combining vivid colours with shading techniques to represent the country's different rock layers. This collection - exclusive to the Museum - is a celebration of that achievement.
