Photographer Stefan Christmann was watching 50 or so emperor penguin chicks form a mini huddle – an important skill for adult life – and pressed the button when one of them stuck its head up. The result is a picture that’s perfect for sending a hug to someone special this Christmas.
Taken in Atka Bay, Antarctica where Stefan was working as a scientist, the endearing image won the Portfolio Award in the 2019 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
