The Mara

From leading wildlife photographer Anup Shah comes this astonishing record of daily life in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Shah captures the struggles and triumphs of life as he moves through times of plenty to the hardships of the dry season. Leading the reader through emotive cycles of life and death, Shah captures strikingly intimate portraits of animals on the world-famous Mara plains.

The Mara follows the rhythm of the seasons, and these photographs capture animals as they encounter new arrivals, displaying anger and fear in their struggle to survive. Offering a glimpse into a circle of life that is both poignant and joyful, this book showcases striking perspectives of the Mara’s open plains.

Author Anup Shah is a world-famous wildlife photographer, and has won a number of categories in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition.

The Mara - as you've never seen before in such detailReview by LBarwick

I am delighted with this purchase – it’s a beautiful book with a simple but hugely effective design, consisting of incredibly detailed and intimate black and white images with sensitively written captions – no large text to distract the eye. And quite right too – Shah obviously wants the animals to take centre stage and that they do. Although there are the main characters you would expect from the Maasai Mara – the lions, elephants and cheetah – some of the most eye-catching images to me were of other species, especially a young curious jackal pup (Inquisitive) and sinister looking crocodile emerging from the river (The Enigma). It may not have been intentional but I particularly like the inside jacket image of zebra herd crossing the river – you get a glimpse of zebra pattern on the edge of the book. Although this is a ‘coffee table book’ with it’s stunning photography, the actual size of this book means it won’t sit heavy on your lap whilst you read – and it’s a great size for Christmas presents without costing a fortune to post (or bulky under the tree). Plus may I recommend you look closely for how many lions appear on the front cover? That’s how much I like this book – I have spent a long time on each and every photo looking for such minute details that Shah has seemingly spent a lifetime obsession with the Mara attempting to get. I would say he has succeeded - this is the Mara as you’ve never seen before, caught in glorious and intimate detail. (Posted on 01/11/2016)
