This ragged-looking comma butterfly has a small white mark on the underside of its wing that resembles a comma. The caterpillars are black with a red band across their back that makes them look like bird droppings. The comma inhabits Europe, North Africa and Asia, and lives in woodland clearings, hedgerows and gardens.
