The name of this beautiful species comes from the colourful eye spots on the wings that look like those found on the tail of the peacock. They inhabit most of temperate Europe and Asia and are found in orchards, gardens and places with lots of flowers. Adults hibernate through the winter in hollow trees, crevices and even in houses.
