British Antarctic Expedition enamel mug

“Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman” – Robert F Scott

This enamel mug shows the emblem of the 1912 British Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Robert F Scott.  The official emblem was designed by Edward Wilson, the expedition’s chief scientist and artist and was used on all the officers’ cutlery, dinnerware and on headed notepaper.

Scott and four companions arrived at the pole on 17 January 1912, to find that a team led by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten them by 34 days. All five perished on their return journey.

Nostalgia for every day useReview by Diana

For anyone who is interested in the history of Antarctic exploration, this is a must. I remember enamel items from my own childhood and had forgotten the evocative feeling of an enamel mug, which is quite unlike anything else. That said, it is still perfectly serviceable for every day use and a great talking point. (Posted on 22/10/2015)
