The drawings and paintings in this collection depict the rich variety of animals, birds, insects and flora found in the different regions of India.
From fine botanical and zoological illustrations to depictions of colourful artefacts and trinkets bought in local markets, the beautiful images in The Art of India were produced throughout the 18th - 20th centuries.
Commissioned in the pursuit of science, commerce and politics, the artworks came from individual artists, collectors and studies of Indian natural history.
Many of the pieces helped advance the understanding of Indian natural history by recording, describing, classifying and naming Indian species.
The book ties in with a new exhibition opening in our Images of Nature gallery.
